There goes the neighbourhood V

Ugh. This is going to be a monster. The whole neighbourhood is full of styish mid-century modern bungalows and this thing is going to be three stories. Eventually all the bungalows on the street are going to be pulled down (one side of the street has already been bought up) and these big townhouse-style residences will be everywhere.

      • My coworker and his wife are dealing with this very issue. Anything they can afford is so dilapidated that it will cost just as much again to fix up and anything decent is out of their price range. Both of them work full time and she’s a nurse, so she’s pulling in decent money too.
I feel very bad for them.

      • House prices are a weird economic story. I was thinking of doing a post on the situation a while back just as a way of trying to figure out what I was thinking about them.

Yeah, if you’re just starting out and looking to be a homeowner it’s tough now.

      • Just on the issue of the cost of fixing things up, inflation with regard to renovation costs has been way more than the core inflation rate. I know when I go visit open houses in my neighbourhood they are quite expensive homes with good location and lots of curb appeal, but the need hundreds of thousands of dollars on renos inside. Unless you do that kind of work yourself (and let’s face it, few of us do), renovations cost a fortune. And that’s hoping you find some decent contractors, which isn’t always easy.
