If you’ve been following this blog for a while you’ll know how much I like taking pictures of local skunks (see here, here, and here). But like a lot of wildlife they’re hard to get a good picture of because they tend to keep a distance, and for obvious reasons you don’t want to get too close. But this mother skunk and one of her nearly full-grown kids were out snuffling around and were so preoccupied with looking for stuff to eat that they let me get right up to them and take a family portrait. Actually, they didn’t even notice me. They did after I took their picture though, and I backed away quickly.

Did they hear the click of the camera?

This time I remembered to put my phone on silent mode. Usually I forget.

That’s supposed to be a ninja cat emoji.

When you think about it, seems like the expression “to get skunked” ought to refer to a blowout rather than a shut-out.

Yeah, I’m not sure where that expression came from. Haven’t heard it in a while!

That is definitely as close as I want to be to them, but I love seeing ’em. They’d be welcome around here, as I think we all know to give them their space. Good call having the phone on silent mode. If a skunk wanders into the area one day, that will be at the top of the checklist before pursuing any picture.š

The only time they bug me is if they spray by my house. It takes a while to air things out.
