There goes the neighbourhood I

So the house just behind me, which was a very nice home, was recently sold and the buyer (a developer) just finished tearing it down. He’s going to build two or three units on the lot for student housing. This doesn’t bother me too much, as I’ve noticed that students aren’t the rowdy, noisy types they used to be. They don’t drink or party as much. But it does mean that I’m going to have to listen to the noise of construction all summer, as they want the units ready to rent by September. I’ll keep you up to date.

Today they were just in with chainsaws cutting the last of the trees down. (You an click on the pic to make it bigger.)

    • There are a lot of students already in this neighbourhood and they are invisible. They don’t even talk to people. They have their earpods in and they look straight ahead and don’t make eye contact. They are WEIRD.

But yeah, it’s going to be a really noisy summer. No problem for me because I get up early anyway, but they start right at 7 am.

  1. That’s the trend, moving more people into the same amount of space.

Best of luck with the construction! If you see any surveyors, make sure to give them some pro-tips so they can do a better job. Surveyors just love it when people tell them how to do their job better 😉

    • Yep, there’s no way just five years ago this would have even been allowed. Now it’s all about trying to build more intensively. Which is fine in principle, but there are a lot of really nice mid-century homes on that street and I’m afraid all of them are on the chopping block.

Since I don’t know anything about surveying or construction I think I’ll just stand with my arms crossed looking stern or shaking my head sadly.

      • What I don’t understand is how much land there is out there, it just not right in or next to an urban area, so it gets ignored.

Probably your best bet. They probably even gps for something this small and that’s getting into territory that is going to date me soon enough, sigh…

      • It’s all about location. People want to be where everyone else wants to be.

I imagine the surveying part of this job is done, so I’ll just have to look on disapprovingly at the builders.
