Gamestopped

Over at Goodreports I’ve added a review of Ben Mezrich’s take on the Gamestop short squeeze, The Antisocial Network. This is the book that the movie Dumb Money was based on. I didn’t care for the movie (in fact, I hated it), and I didn’t like the book for a lot of the same reasons, but I think Mezrich at least gives you enough of the story to draw your own conclusions about what was going on.

Given the terrifying explosion in sports betting that’s happening, the crypto phenomenon, and the broader “gamification” of the stock market it’s a lesson that really needs to be driven home at every opportunity: If you’re gambling, you’re losing. The house always wins.

  1. Thankfully I am financially educationally inept, I don’t understand what ‘shorting’ is, know zilch about stocks and shares, and cryptocurrency is a bonkers concept I can’t get my head around. Im happy with that!

    • Yep, and the way it’s gotten into everybody’s life so it’s made so easy on your phone is a BIG problem. The stories about the epidemic of sports betting today are scary. Plus I really hate how ads for DraftKings and FanDuel are all over every event and sports broadcast. It’s bigger than the games. I couldn’t care less about all this fantasy football crap and it’s taken over now.

  2. Sports gambling is the worst. Cause that’s what I’m exposed to more than anything else. Growing up, we had one guy who did a regular show on horseracing (which was easy enough to ignore) and nothing else on radio or TV. Now it’s everywhere for everything.

Speaking of sports, though, guess who made the pre-race festivities for the NASCAR Cup Championship yesterday? None other than Sydney Sweeney! : -)

    • I honestly think there’s going to be a serious crisis if the betting-on-your-phone about everything keeps getting bigger. I get buying the odd lottery ticket, but gambling can’t be this invasive and part of so many people’s lives.

Good for Sydney! She’s making the most of her moment.
