  1. I have a conspiracy theory, but I come by it honestly. When I watched Sneak Previews as a kid, I remember my parents scoffing at Siskel & Ebert because, they said, they had originally not liked Star Wars, but quickly changed their tune when it became such a huge hit. Of course back then there was no way to confirm what they were saying, but because at the time I liked critics, this bothered me enough that it found its way into my permanent memory. Well, times have changed, and not so very long ago, I decided to see if I could prove it. I found “the” video of Siskel & Ebert reviewing Star Wars and of course they loved it. But there’s something very strange about it. At least one of them mentions seeing the film several times, which was not their regular practice for a new film. It was if they were re-visiting the movie. And if that’s the case, then they probably saw and reviewed it earlier. So that makes me wonder if my parents were right and the bastards buried the original episode to hide their stupidity. I still don’t know for sure one way or the other.

    • Your parents might have just misremembered. I do that all the time. Got caught out in a bid one just yesterday that I had to go back and talk to the guy and correct myself this morning. Of course he’s forgotten all about what I said, but I still didn’t want it hanging out there.

I always thought Ebert liked Star Wars anyway. They did make some howlers. If I remember correctly I think they both got on their high horses to dump on Blue Velvet. But most of the time they were pretty good.
