The Canadian Encyclopedia was the brainchild of publisher Mel Hurtig, and the first edition came out in 1985. The bookmark on the left is a promotion for it, and pictured is the original 1985 edition, which came in three handsome volumes. My father was one of the original subscribers so that’s how we came to have a copy. It sold out its initial run right away, and a second edition was published in 1988. The bookmark on the right is for a single-volume 2000 edition.
I thought it was an excellent resource and I’m glad I’ve held on to it over the years. I don’t think it’s published as a print edition anymore, having moved online.
Book: The Canadian Encyclopedia

That’ll be worth a few bob now! I notice the page opened is all about people – it looks more like a Who’s Who than an encyclopaedia.

Not worth that much, as it’s well used.
It’s not a general encyclopedia so they don’t have entries on things like physics and biology, etc. So there are a lot of people, but also Canadian geography and history.

Is this a encyclopedia ABOUT Canada, or just by a canadian publisher?
When I first saw teh dates on the bookmarks, I thought it was announced in 1985 but hadn’t come out until 2000. That would be a very long wait 😀

It’s about all things Canadian. Canadian history, geography, people.
Yeah, that would have been a long wait. Not like waiting a couple of months for the new Larry Correia to drop!
