Birthdays come and go. And so do birthday cakes. But when the people at my condo get together to celebrate a birthday there are always these amazing cakes made by one super cake-maker. Here are a couple of her recent ones. And keep in mind these are much bigger than they look in the pictures. Those are full-size plates and the cakes fed a table of six or seven with half the cake left over. I should also say that you can eat the flowers, but you’re not supposed to.

Eating cake. THAT’S how you train for a marathon at 2am? If I had an Old Coach, I’m sure he’d have something to say about that.
I’m really glad you made the point that those were full sized plates. The cakes kind of look like cupcakes in the pictures.

Yeah, there’s something about taking pictures of food that does that. You mentioned it a week ago with the post you had of a picture of fettucine. These cakes were really big.

Perspective is definitely a big part of photography. Guess that’s part of why neither of us have become big time famous photographers.

Only famous photographer I know lives in Gateshead. Which is *not* Sunderland!

I wouldn’t even know those are places if you hadn’t just stated it. Those are cities/towns, right?

Fraggle lives in Gateshead. Sunderland is right next door but apparently they speak a totally different language.

My level is of the “Fraggle lives in the UK” and “Eddie lives in Scotland” variety. That’s about as far as it extends, hahahaha 😀

to put things in “perspective”, the UK is 10x bigger than New Hampshire.
But that’s not saying much because of how tiny we are, hahahahaa!

My cousin, who is even shorter than me, bought herself a hooded sweatshirt (hoodie, pullover? not sure the term you all use) with “I’m not short, I’m fun sized” printed on the front. She got a lot of comments. She’s a people person though, so she loved every second of it 🙂

They may be called “jumpers” in the UK. They’re weird.

Is that because that’s what they wear when they jump off builders to commit suicide?

We call them hoodies when they have a hood, sweatshirts if they’re not knitwear, and jumpers if they are. I would like to short enough to have that slogan on my hoody, but 5’ 5” & a 1/2 probably doesn’t work.

Yeah, we restrict that phrase for the 5′ 4″ and under club 😀
Thanks for explaining. I’m never going to remember though, hahahahaa.

What you need to do when photographing a cake is to put something next to it like a fork or knife and that gives the cake, or cut a single portion wedge in it and pull it out a bit. That works for scale and perspective.

That went a bit wrong but you get the drift hopefully.

I gotcha. I was thinking it needed something like that but of course when there are a bunch of people milling around and you’re just taking a quick pic you forget. I will keep learning!
