Ah, the National Book Festival. I remember it well . . .
Just kidding. Actually I don’t remember the NBF at all. But I’m not sure anyone else does either. I picked up these bookmarks celebrating the 1983 and 1985 festivals (forty years ago!), but I don’t recall attending any NBF events. Nor could I find anything about them on the Internet.
My guess is that they didn’t last that long, and were eventually superseded by the Word on the Street festivals that started in Toronto in the 1990s and are still going. Because how many book festivals can you have? Even the more successful ones that I know of don’t draw all that much attention.

Yep, cute little bookmarks. Forgot I even had them. Been finding all kinds of stuff going through old boxes.

Yeah, most book festivals I was ever aware of were through school. I loved them, but I know most of the kids didn’t care at all. The philistines….

The few I know of seem to be dying.

Personally, I blame Northrop Frye. He totally dropped the ball on his education writings and multiple generations have suffered. I’m thinking somebody needs to track him down and show him we don’t appreciate him letting us down like that…

I don’t know how practical Frye’s idea might have been. But I’m pretty sure if we could dig him up and show him the current educational landscape he’d be depressed.
As always, I blame the Internetz.
