This is one of the more mysterious items in my bookmark collection. It’s a picture of a bird but I don’t know what kind of a bird. Possibly because it’s not a bird from around here. I’m also not sure where the bookmark came from, who gave it to me, or when. My only clue is a boy’s name on the back and the information that he was “10 años.” So perhaps someone brought this back from Spain or Portugal? Or a Spanish-speaking country? I don’t know. But it looks pretty.

Without stopping her knitting, no doubt.

And drinking tea and eating crumpets. That’s how they do solve mysteries in the Old Country after all.

And not getting up until after 10 in the morning, and having kidneys and bacon for breakfast. Those were the days.

The Glory Days of Empire when real men died at 50. None of this lingering around business…

It’s really pretty. Don’t recognise the species though.

I figure it’s either some bird native to another part of the world or else it’s made up entirely. Given that the artist was 10 years old, it might be made up.

I think that’s the case. It’s like a cross between a robin and a great tit. Sigh, that’s going to engender smut isn’t it.

Only in Eddie’s mind. He’s incorrigible.

No smut on my behalf.

Markings of a blue tit, but not sure about the red gullet.

Yeah, it’s the striking red and yellow parts that look made up. But I’m no expert.

I feel I get zero credit for a mature discussion of birds here.

What can I do? Without a snigger, I looked at this image and offered an informed view of the potential clues in the plumage. And what do I get? Mocked. The leafs that the bird is sitting on might provide a clue; tits like coconuts, and so it might be a coconut tree…

I would never mock you talking about tits.

I do so only with the loftiest of motives.
