This is a bit of a fudge for my Bookstores No More series, since there are still four Book City locations open in Toronto. But this bookmark came from the original Book City store, which opened in 1976 in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood. It’s the one I went to when I lived just down the road a bit. It was Book City’s flagship store, but closed doors in 2014. Fondly remembered!

Not the prettiest, but a nice relic of times gone by.

Exactly. That’s the fun thing about bookmarks. They can be fancy or fun or just something you picked up that reminds you of something that doesn’t exist anymore.

Do you still have that bookmark that shows you walking to school in July, in the snow, uphill both ways? I thought that was the best bookmark…

I remember back then we had to make bookmarks out of the bark we chewed off trees. They were rough, but lasted forever.

Well, you needed them when all you had were those 2 ton stone tablets…
