I don’t like groundhogs. They were the one animal I would hunt while living in the country. But in my last years on the farm they had all but disappeared, hunted to extinction by wild dogs.
Unfortunately, when I moved I discovered that they had relocated to the city before me. And now I can’t even shoot them.

What have they ever done to you?

They dig holes. And they smell.

You can’t shoot them, not even with a pellet gun? I’m assuming regulation and stuff?
What about poison? Or a “make your own” kind of trap that puts a spear through them?

Not a chance with a real gun. Pellet gun wouldn’t kill them anyway. No poison either. You can trap them, as long as you don’t harm them in any way, and then you have to transport them somewhere else.

Do they damage things? he looks quite cute.

They can cause damage depending on where they dig their holes. They dig up everything. They aren’t actually that cute. Just fat rodents.

You need a cat.

Never seen a cat take on a groundhog. Not sure if the foxes we have even bother with them. They prefer rabbits (which are far tastier, I’m sure). What you need are wild dogs, or any kind of hunting dog. They basically killed them off back at the farm. But we don’t have wild dogs in the city, and the dogs people do have are kind of useless. French bulldogs, etc. Actually had a neighbour who was dogsitting one of those this summer and she was terrified that the groundhogs were going to attack it. Sheesh.

When in doubt, hit them in the head with a shovel.
