What does that even mean? Part II

I can’t figure this out. First off: what is a promise? Is it anything like a guarantee? Probably not. Second: how do they define “fresh”? Past the expiry or best-before date? Visibly starting to go bad? Unfit for human consumption? Third: if something is not fresh, should they even be giving it away for free? Shouldn’t they be getting rid of it? Lots of times you can get stuff at the grocery store for 50% off because it’s getting old, and in some cases (like bread) stale and even moldy. Clearly it’s been marked down because it’s no longer fresh, or at least as fresh as it should be. Can I take it to the cashier and demand I get it for free?

  1. Isn’t your last line exactly right? If it’s rotten or mouldy, you can have it? We’ve got rid of many sell by dates in the UK, because it was creating so much waste. I take it Zehers is like Whole Foods, upmarket, pricey cabbage shop?

  2. A promise is a declaration that what they say will happen I should think. Fresh for bakery items is that they were made on the day you’re purchasing them, same with vegetables, (except carrots-they last for ages like new) so yep they shouldn’t be doing 50% for older stuff, they should be free. That’s how I read it anyway.

    • But I’ve never seen anyone arguing that something wasn’t fresh so they should get it for free, and I don’t know how you’d argue it. Even lots of bakery items are still sold as fresh up to a week after they were made. In some ways, what’s fresh is a subjective call.

      • Yep think you’re right, the definition of fresh is “of food – recently made or obtained; not tinned, frozen, or otherwise preserved.” so really it depends on your definition of ‘recently’.

  3. MY interpretation is that they have little dwarven warriors in a backroom who they will release like hounds of war if you try to go into the shop at 1am. And those dwarves will totally get fresh with you….
