In my notes on The Empty Man I made reference to a page in the comic where a woman pulls back a shower curtain to reveal her infected husband seeming to decompose or be transformed before her eyes. But as I said in my notes, I couldn’t be sure what was actually happening because of the way it was drawn. Curious minds in the comments wanted to be able to judge for themselves, so I give you the page in question and allow you to draw your own grisly conclusions. I still think my own guess of explosive diarrhea is probably closest to the mark.

The way he says ‘I can’t get it out’ suggests some kind of fecal boulder, that’s what kills most people, on the toilet.

Based on panel two, the man is facing right. In panel 4, I would say he went down on his hands and knees, still facing right. And his head exploded or something.
But based on the art, it almost looks like his junk in panel 4, which would go with your theory
Either way, that art sucks. I don’t know whether to congratulate you on reading a whole book of it, or sympathize with you for the ordeal it must have been.

The bottom of the page almost looks like a blood-stained parody of a Roy Lichtenstein True Romance cover. But yeah, I’m stymied as to what the fourth pic is supposed to be.
The comic had some interesting bits, but was frustrating too.

I think it’s coming out of his tummy as I can see what looks like intestines on the right but also I think his head has blown off. What’s on the next page!!??

The story changes scene after this, as it’s quite a closer. What more is there to say after this? I’m afraid poor Josh is a goner.
I can’t see the tummy part. It looks like either his head or his ass has blown off, but neither makes much sense.

Is there a graphic novel version? I seem to remember Irvine Welsh having a book where the text is shaped into the form of a giant turd.
