Bookmarked! #106: Bookstores No More XIV: Nicholas Hoare

This bookmark is from the Montreal Nicholas Hoare bookstore, which opened in 1971 and closed in 2012 due to the usual reasons (per the CBC: “high rent and pressure from online and big box retailers”). Plus the owner was looking to retire. The Ottawa store closed at the same time. The Toronto Nicholas Hoare stayed open for another year.

  1. The only bookstores left in our area are an independent one that has gone through about 3 name/ownership/location changes in the last 10 years and a barnes and noble at one of the big malls.

  2. I haven’t been to a new-book store for a very long time. The recent closing that made me sad was the Skatetown just up the road. Had only ever been myself (with the family) one time for a school function or something years ago, but I loved that it was there. In fact, it’s still there a couple years later, sign and all. If I had the Riches of the Indies I’d buy it myself and hire someone to run it.
